Sensible World of Soccer and Sensible Soccer
Sensible World of Soccer, shortened by players to SWOS, is the 1994 game that added a 20-season career to Sensible Soccer's top-down match. Sensible Soccer is the 1992 original. They share a pitch. They are not the same box.

What the 1994 game added
Wikipedia and the 96/97 manual agree on the scale, with a range rather than a single headcount: about 1,500 clubs, and somewhere between 26,000 and 27,000 players. I will not write 26,500. The career runs 20 seasons. The manual also describes 146 preset competitions.
The release month is December 1994 in the usual telling. A specific day, 6 December, is marked citation-needed on the Wikipedia article, so I am not printing the day.
Chris Chapman is quoted, via the series article, as saying the 95/96 update was the version they had originally wanted. 96/97 is the later data set that GOG sells and that OpenSWOS asks you to own.
Management, in the manual's words
The Dutch and English searches for a manager mode are about this career, not a separate product. You run transfers, tactics, and a season. The manual's transfer search can filter by position and by a skill, and a deal can include cash plus up to two players. Custom teams inside the game stop at 48.
The Xbox store's SWOS is this game's 2007 console release, still listed in 2026. It is not a new management sim.
Questions people ask
Is SWOS an acronym on this site?
Here it means Sensible World of Soccer. Other expansions of the same four letters are on the meaning page, and they are not this game.
How many players are in the database?
26,000 to 27,000, written as a range by the sources I trust. I do not have a newer official census.
Which one should I buy?
96/97 on GOG if you want this career on PC. The 1992 game if you only want a match and you already own the disk.
