There is no current official strategy guide. The text I trust is the SWOS 96/97 manual scan, plus a 2002 player guide by Ricky and a handful of single-source cheat notes that I label as such. Pick the job you are trying to do.

Six different jobs
Controls, tactics, star players, cheats, the shape of the database, and scanned manuals answer different questions. I split them so a cheat code never sits next to a formation as if they had the same weight.

Skills, once, so the other pages can point here
The manual rates outfield players with seven letters: T tackling, H heading, P passing, S speed, C control, F finishing, V something the scan is less tidy about in every language, plus a star rating outside career mode. Goalkeepers are on their own scale. I repeat the letters on the database page and I do not invent an eighth attribute.

Is there an official 2026 guide?
No. Codemasters has not published a new Sensible manual. The 96/97 PDF is a scan hosted by SWOS United.
Which page is safe for a new career?
Read controls, then tactics. Treat the cheap-player prices as 1990s in-game figures.
