Which Sensible Soccer version should you play?

Buy SWOS 96/97 on GOG if you want the game people mean. Buy the Xbox listing if you want a console. Pick Sensible Soccer 2006 only if you want the later 3D game on purpose. I am not publishing a numbered ranking.

A comparison, not a trophy

Widely repeated advice in the manual era and in later writing treats 96/97 as the complete 2D game: career, transfers, and the huge database. That is a reputation, not a measurement I took.

Mistakes the table is there to stop

There is no PS3 edition of Sensible Soccer 2006. 2006's platforms in the series article are Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. There is no Sensible Soccer 2 sitting between them. The 2007 Xbox game is SWOS, not a new numbered Sensible.

If your machine is a PS5, a Switch, or a Steam account, none of the official rows above are native. Use the platform pages before you buy a disc for the wrong console.

Questions people ask

Is 96/97 objectively the best?

I will not write that. It is the version I would buy for a PC, because it is on sale and it is the game the community still updates.

Should I start with 2006?

Only if you want the 3D game. GOG's own score snapshot was 2.5 out of 5 from 168 ratings, against 4.5 out of 5 from 414 ratings on SWOS 96/97. Those are store ratings, not mine.
