Sensible Soccer controls
The 96/97 manual describes one fire button that changes with the moment. It does not publish a universal keyboard layout, because you choose the keys when you install. OpenSWOS, a different program, does publish defaults.

One button, from the manual
With the ball, a tap of fire passes. Holding fire kicks toward the way the player is facing, which is how you shoot. Without the ball, fire is a slide if the ball is below chest height, and a header or diving header if the ball is above the chest.
Aftertouch is the part people remember. As soon as the ball leaves the foot, push a direction to bend it, lift it, or keep it down. The manual says an earlier push has a stronger effect.
Named keys in the original, separate from the ones you bind: P pauses, R replays, H shows highlights, S shows stats.
OpenSWOS defaults, labelled as OpenSWOS
The playing notes for OpenSWOS set movement on the arrow keys. Fire is Right Ctrl, Space, Left Ctrl, or Enter. P pauses, S opens stats, R is the instant replay, H is the post-match replay. Triple-tapping a direction opens the substitution menu. This is not a player-switch shortcut.
On a pad, A or B is fire, Start or plus pauses, Back or minus opens stats, Y is replay, X is the post-match replay, and the shoulder buttons open the bottom-team and top-team substitution menus respectively. That is the project's map. It is not a reconstruction of the SNES pad.
| Platform | What is safe to say |
|---|---|
| PC original | Keys are chosen at install. P, R, H, S are named. |
| OpenSWOS | Author-only defaults from the playing notes, described above. |
| Amiga | One fire button, same context rules. Joystick in the usual port. |
| SNES and Mega Drive | Same one-button logic. Exact pads are in the scans, not retyped here. |
Questions people ask
What is the default WASD layout?
There isn't one in the 1996 manual. Bind the keys at install, or use OpenSWOS if you want a published default.
How do headers work?
Without the ball, fire when the ball is above chest height. The manual pairs that with the slide at lower height.
Mega Drive button names?
I am not inventing a three-button chart from a video. The manual index links the scans.
